Does AI Drawing Review Need to Be On-Prem?

Published October 25, 2026•4 min read

Helonic is an AI construction drawing analysis platform for general contractors and IT teams whose policy says AI drawing review must run on-prem. Most AI drawing review does not need to be on-prem, even when the first answer from IT is that it does. "On-prem" is usually shorthand for a few narrower controls. A cloud tool that proves those controls in writing generally clears the same bar.

Direct answer. An on-prem requirement for AI drawing review usually means four things: a known storage location, no model training on the files, deletion on request, and access limited to named people. A cloud tool such as Helonic that documents all four usually qualifies. A true on-prem requirement holds when a contract or regulation forbids third-party hosting outright.

What does "on-prem" usually mean?

What IT saysWhat it usually meansWhat proves it
"Files can't leave our building"We need to know where files are stored, and who can reach themNamed hosting provider and region, plus the subprocessor list
"We don't want our drawings in an AI"Our files must not train a model anyone else usesA written no-training statement in the contract
"We need to control the data"We can delete it, and get it back, when we chooseA deletion term with written confirmation, and an export
"Only our people should see it"Access limited to named users, and loggedNamed accounts, SSO for rollout, and an audit log

Ask IT which row they are worried about. Each one has a document that answers it. The full pre-upload list is in what IT needs before an AI drawing review.

When is on-prem a real requirement?

  • Classified work, or federal and defense projects where the contract limits where controlled information may be stored.
  • Owner agreements that prohibit third-party hosting of project documents, common on some data center and critical infrastructure jobs.
  • A written company policy that has no cloud exception at all, including for Procore or Autodesk.

The third case is rare. If the team already runs Procore, Autodesk, or Microsoft 365 in the cloud, the policy has exceptions, and the question becomes whether this vendor meets the same terms.

Is a private cloud the same as on-prem?

No. The NIST definition of cloud computing says a private cloud may be run by the organization or a third party, on or off premises. A private deployment at a cloud provider is still hosted off yours. If the requirement is really "no shared tenancy," ask for that specifically, since it is a different question from location.

What does running AI review on-prem cost?

Hardware, people, and freshness. The models that read drawings need GPU servers, someone to run them, and regular updates that an on-prem install tends to fall behind on. For most GCs, that cost is larger than the risk it removes.

Helonic runs in the cloud. It is SOC 2 compliant, encrypts files with TLS 1.2 or higher in transit and AES-256 at rest, and does not use customer data to train AI models, per its security page and AI policy. If IT still blocks it, find out which answer was missing using what IT will block, or compare vendors with how to compare two vendors' security answers. The pilot steps are in how to pilot AI drawing review software, and the full criteria are in what to look for in an AI construction drawing review platform.

Practitioner insight

“I said on-prem because that's what I always say. When we sat down, what I actually needed was where the files live, no training, and deletion in the contract. They had all three.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI drawing review need to be installed on-prem?
Usually not. Most on-prem requirements come down to a known storage location, no model training, deletion on request, and access limited to named people, which a cloud tool can document.
When is on-prem a real requirement?
Classified work, federal or defense contracts that limit where controlled information is stored, owner agreements that prohibit third-party hosting, and company policies with no cloud exception at all.
Is a private cloud the same as on-prem?
No. A private deployment at a cloud provider is still hosted off your premises. If the concern is shared tenancy, ask about that directly.
Is Helonic available on-prem?
Helonic runs in the cloud. It is SOC 2 compliant, encrypts files in transit and at rest, and does not train AI models on customer data.
