Two terms teams use interchangeably on site, and one contract clause that treats them very differently
Record drawings and as-built drawings both document what was actually constructed, but they aren't always the same deliverable. An as-built is typically the contractor's field-marked redline set tracking changes as they happen. A record drawing is the formal, drafted document the design team produces from those redlines, often the version specifications actually require at closeout.
On most jobs, nobody stops to check which term the contract actually uses. That's fine until closeout, when an owner's rep asks for "record drawings" and the GC hands over a stack of marked-up field prints instead of the polished CAD deliverable the spec requires.
