Drawing Comparison

Best Drawing Comparison Software for Construction

Helonic is an AI construction drawing analysis platform for people comparing AI tools for Drawing Comparison. Overlay tools show where the lines moved. Change-reading tools tell you what changed and on which sheet. Here is which one fits each revision job.

Published · Updated

Drawing comparison software lines up two revisions of a construction drawing and marks what was added, removed, or moved. Bluebeam's Compare Documents and Overlay Pages are the tools most teams already own, and Procore and Autodesk build an overlay into their drawing logs. Helonic's revision comparison reads both revisions and reports each change with its sheet location, including changes nobody clouded.

The real choice is between an overlay and a written change list. An overlay is a picture of the difference, and a person still has to read it. A change list says what moved and where. For the manual method, see our guide on how to compare drawing revisions.

The tools, ranked by what they do best

1

Helonic

That's us

Written change list by sheet

Helonic's revision comparison takes the previous set and the new revision, matches sheets by number and title, and compares each pair for visual and text differences. Changes come back sorted as dimensional, material, layout, notes, or administrative, with the sheet they're on, whether or not anyone drew a cloud. Helonic's drawing review checks the same 2D PDF sets for coordination and code issues across 10 categories.

Best for: PMs and estimators who need to know what an ASI or bulletin changed without flipping sheets

2

Bluebeam Revu Compare Documents and Overlay Pages

Visual diffs in Revu

Both tools come with Bluebeam's Core, Complete, and Max plans, not Basics, and Core lists at $330 per user per year. Compare Documents writes a new PDF with an orange cloud around each difference and suits scanned drawings. Overlay Pages stacks the revisions in colors and suits vector PDFs. Max adds Smart Overlay, a preview that compares two sets and scores the match across sheets and disciplines.

Best for: Teams already in Revu who want a quick visual diff today

3

Trunk Tools TrunkReview

Bulletin review in the PM platform

TrunkReview starts when a revision lands in Procore or Autodesk, compares every sheet to its prior version, and returns an overlay, a plain-language narrative of each change, and a drafted RFI or sub email when one is needed. Trunk Tools says it catches unclouded changes and reviews a 20-sheet bulletin in under 10 minutes.

Best for: GCs who want bulletins reviewed the moment they are uploaded

4

Procore Drawings compare

Overlay in the drawing log

Procore's Drawings tool overlays two versions of a sheet, with removed items in red and added items in blue, and the result downloads as a PNG. Compare Set emails you a PDF of every drawing in a set against its previous version. Drawings of different sizes can't be compared.

Best for: Teams whose drawing log already lives in Procore

5

Autodesk Docs Compare

PDF, DWG, and RVT overlays

Autodesk Docs, now Forma Data Management, and the Autodesk Build Sheets tool compare two versions of a PDF, DWG, or RVT drawing as a red and blue overlay or side by side. On 2D RVT drawings it lists object-level changes as added, removed, or modified. At Autodesk University in September 2026, Autodesk announced Drawing Change Analysis to help teams find the meaningful differences between revisions.

Best for: Autodesk Forma projects, especially with RVT sheets

6

Diff GT

On-premise PDF comparison

Diff GT, from the German software company CSci Computer Science, compares vector or bitmap PDF drawings, pairs pages when page counts differ, and colors deletions red, additions blue, and changes purple. It runs fully on-premise on Windows and macOS and exports a PDF report. CAD files have to be exported to PDF first.

Best for: Firms that cannot upload drawings to a cloud tool

7

Vertigraph Drawing Compare

Raster overlays for re-takeoff

Vertigraph's Drawing Compare aligns an old and new raster drawing in PDF, TIFF, or PNG and paints additions and deletions in colors you choose. It saves the result as a new drawing you can open in Vertigraph's BidScreen XL or SiteWorx/OS to take off only what changed.

Best for: Estimators re-pricing an addendum the night before bid

What is drawing comparison software?

Drawing comparison software aligns two versions of a sheet and marks what changed between them. Most tools do it as an overlay: old work in one color, new work in another, unchanged lines in black.

A newer group, including Helonic and TrunkReview, reads both sheets and writes the changes out as a list. That list is what you hand to a sub or turn into an RFI.

When is a pixel overlay the better tool?

A pixel overlay wins when you need a fast visual answer on a handful of sheets and the team already owns the PDF editor. Bluebeam's Overlay Pages, Procore, and Autodesk run in seconds, cost nothing extra on a plan you already pay for, and show exactly where a line moved.

Overlays get harder to read when a sheet shifts a few pixels, when text reflows, or when a bulletin touches 80 sheets. Procore's own help article tells you to realign when every line shows up red and blue.

Why do unclouded changes matter?

Unclouded changes cost the most because nobody knows to look for them. Trunk Tools puts them at about 10 to 20 percent of meaningful bulletin changes.

An overlay does show an unclouded change, but only to someone scanning that part of the sheet. Our guide to revision clouds covers how design teams are supposed to mark changes and where that habit breaks down.

Does comparing revisions replace drawing review?

Comparison tells you what changed. A coordination check tells you whether that change broke something on another sheet, like a wall moved on A-201 that now clashes with a duct on M-201 nobody touched.

Pair comparison with a coordination check on the revised set. Helonic runs both on 2D PDFs, and our list of AI tools for 2D PDF plan review covers the other options.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare documents in Bluebeam?

Bluebeam Revu compares documents from Document > Compare Documents on a Core, Complete, or Max plan. Pick the original as Document A and the revision as Document B, choose an alignment method, and Revu writes a new PDF ending in _Diff with an orange cloud around each difference.

What is the difference between Compare Documents and Overlay Pages in Bluebeam?

Compare Documents marks each difference with a cloud markup and works best on scanned drawings, while Overlay Pages stacks the files in colors and works best on vector PDFs. Bluebeam's support docs suggest choosing by whether your PDFs are raster or vector.

Can drawing comparison software find unclouded changes?

Overlay tools show every line that moved, clouded or not, but a person still has to spot it on the sheet. Helonic and TrunkReview write each change out, unclouded ones included, so the reviewer reads a list instead of scanning colors.

Does Procore have drawing comparison?

Procore's Drawings tool compares two versions of a drawing as an overlay, with removed items in red and added items in blue. Compare Set emails a PDF comparing every drawing in a set to its previous version.

What is the cheapest way to compare drawing revisions?

Procore and Autodesk Docs include drawing comparison at no extra cost on projects that already use them. Diff GT and Vertigraph Drawing Compare both offer evaluation versions to try first.

How is Helonic's revision comparison different from an overlay?

Helonic's revision comparison reads both revisions and reports each change with its sheet and change type, so you get a written list rather than a colored image. Use an overlay to check one sheet quickly, and Helonic when a bulletin touches many sheets. The method behind both is in our guide on how to compare drawing revisions.

How this page was researched: We compared each tool on what it hands back after a revision: a colored overlay, cloud markups, or a written list of changes. Vendor facts come from Bluebeam's support articles and pricing page, Procore's and Autodesk's help docs, Autodesk's September 15, 2026 Forma announcement, the TrunkReview product page, CSci's Diff GT page and 3.8 release notes, and Vertigraph's Drawing Compare page, all retrieved October 2026.
