VDC and BIM
Helonic is an AI construction drawing analysis platform for people comparing AI tools for VDC and BIM. Model clash tools for what your team modeled, and 2D review for the issued sheets and consultant scope that never made it into the model.
Published · Updated
Most VDC teams already own a clash tool. The gap is the scope outside the federated model and the sheets the field builds from. 2D vs 3D clash detection explains the method difference, and this page names the tool for each job.
2D review for what the model does not cover
Helonic reads the issued PDF set across architectural, structural, MEP, and civil sheets and flags clashes, code issues, missing information, and unclouded changes between revisions, with exact page coordinates on every finding. No model, Revit, or IFC export is needed. On a Boston campus building with a BIM team, it found a 6-inch duct overlapping a joist whose largest allowed hole is 2 inches, a clash the model coordination had missed.
Best for: Consultant scope that was never modeled and the issued sheets the field builds from
Federated model clash detection
Navisworks Manage runs Clash Detective across the federated model built from NWC files, with hard and clearance tests and time-based clashing through TimeLiner. The 2026 release added assignees, priorities, and grouping by property data inside Clash Detective. It only sees geometry someone modeled.
Best for: Running the weekly clash matrix on a federated model
Rule-based model checking
Solibri checks IFC models against configurable rules for clashes, clearance zones, and model data, and reruns those checks on new model versions. Its Advanced and Premium editions open models from Autodesk Forma and sync issues back. Choose it when the job is model quality and owner BIM requirements, not only intersections.
Best for: IFC model validation and clearance rules
Clash automation and issue tracking
Revizto runs scheduled clash tests, groups related clashes into one issue, and syncs them into a shared issue tracker that trades can work from. Sheets can be overlaid on the 3D model next to clash results, and issues can link to Procore RFIs.
Best for: Coordination meetings where trades resolve clashes in one shared tracker
Automatic clashes in Autodesk Forma
Model Coordination, sold as Forma Design Collaboration (formerly BIM Collaborate Pro), detects clashes automatically when RVT, DWG, NWC, or IFC models are added to a coordination space. Reviewers mark each clash as an issue or not an issue. It fits teams that keep models in Autodesk Forma and want clash results without a desktop run.
Best for: Cloud clash detection for models already stored in Autodesk Forma
Revision change detection
TrunkReview detects changes across drawing revisions, clouded or not, and returns an overlay with written notes. It connects to Procore and Autodesk Forma Build. It tells you what changed in a bulletin, which is a different question from whether the set coordinates.
Best for: Catching unclouded changes when a bulletin or ASI lands
Use the model tools on what was modeled and a 2D reviewer on what was issued. Navisworks, Solibri, Revizto, and Model Coordination test geometry in the federated model. Helonic reads the PDF set that goes to bid, permit, and the field.
The two passes find different misses. AI vs BIM clash detection walks through what each catches, and best 2D clash detection software ranks the sheet-based tools.
A federated model misses scope nobody modeled and changes made on sheets after the last model drop. Fire protection, low voltage, kitchen equipment, and specialty consultants often arrive as PDFs only. Late bulletins can change a detail on the sheet without anyone updating the model.
On one higher-ed project with a BIM team, Helonic found a 6-inch duct overlapping a joist that allowed a 2-inch hole, which model coordination had not caught. The write-up is the Boston campus building case study.
Run Helonic on the issued set before bid or before each coordination milestone, and bring its sheet-located findings into the same meeting as the clash report. The Autodesk integration can push the issues Helonic finds into Autodesk Forma as RFIs, and the same push works in Procore, so they land where the model issues already live.
This keeps the model tools on modeled scope and adds a pass on everything else. The method comparison is 2D vs 3D clash detection, and the product page is clash detection.
VDC managers usually need two kinds of tool. Navisworks, Solibri, Revizto, or Model Coordination test the federated model, and Helonic reviews the issued 2D PDF set, including consultant sheets that never get modeled.
Helonic does not replace Navisworks for federated model clash detection. Navisworks runs clash detection on the federated model, and Helonic reviews the issued PDFs for coordination, code, and missing-information issues on sheets. Helonic vs Navisworks covers when to use each.
Helonic finds coordination conflicts directly on 2D PDFs with no BIM model, Revit file, or IFC export. It compares architectural, structural, MEP, and civil sheets and reports the exact page location of each conflict.
The field builds from the issued sheets, and not every trade or consultant is in the model. A 2D pass covers PDF-only scope and late sheet changes that never reached the model. See the BIM-to-field gap.
Navisworks is the common choice for geometry clash runs on a federated model. Solibri adds rule-based checks on IFC models, including clearance zones and model data requirements. Many VDC teams use one for coordination and the other for model quality.
Milind is the co-founder and CEO of Helonic, where he leads product and go-to-market for AI-powered construction drawing analysis. He works closely with general contractors, project managers, estimators, and owners to understand how drawing quality drives project outcomes - and where AI can reduce RFIs, change orders, and rework. Milind has interviewed hundreds of construction professionals across project delivery roles, from preconstruction estimators at ENR top-400 contractors to facilities directors at institutional owners, and uses those conversations to shape both product direction and the way Helonic talks about the work.
How this page was researched: Sorted tools by the input each one needs: a federated model, an IFC model, or the issued 2D PDF set. Model coordination features were checked against Autodesk's Navisworks 2026 and Model Coordination help, Solibri's product pages, and Revizto's help center in October 2026. Helonic is our product and is listed first for 2D drawing review; the model tools are ranked by the coordination job VDC teams run on them.
