Will AI Drawing Review Create More RFIs?
Helonic is an AI construction drawing analysis platform for general contractors and project managers worried that AI drawing review will flood the architect with RFIs. AI drawing review will create more RFIs if a team sends every finding to the architect. Most teams that worry about this have seen a findings list with 200 rows and pictured 200 RFIs. In practice, a small share of findings should ever become one.
Direct answer. Helonic and other AI drawing review tools raise more findings than a manual pass, but a finding only becomes an RFI when it needs the design team's answer after award. The rest go to an internal fix, a bid qualification, a pre-bid question, or get dismissed. Sorted that way, review moves questions to bid time, when answers are cheaper.
Where should each finding go?
| If the finding | It goes to | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Your own team can resolve it | Internal note or coordination item | Two trades drawn in the same chase where the GC sets the sequence |
| It changes price, and the bid is still open | Bid qualification or exclusion | Spec calls for a fire-rated assembly the wall type schedule does not show |
| It needs the designer, and bid questions are still open | Pre-bid question, answered by addendum | Door hardware set referenced on the plan but missing from the spec |
| It needs the designer, after award | RFI | Beam size on the framing plan does not match the beam schedule |
| Duplicate, already answered, or a drafting slip with obvious intent | Dismiss with a reason | Sheet title misspelled, or a note already revised by addendum 2 |
One person does this sort, once, before anything leaves the team. Usually that is the project engineer or the precon lead who owns the review. Which document answers which kind of question is in RFI vs ASI vs bulletin vs change order.
Which findings should become an RFI?
A finding earns an RFI when all three are true:
- Only the design team can answer it.
- The answer changes what gets built, what it costs, or when.
- The documents do not already answer it somewhere else in the set or an addendum.
If one is false, it stays inside the team. When it does qualify, write it so the architect can answer in one pass, following how to write an RFI.
Is an RFI raised during the bid worse than one raised later?
It is cheaper. A question asked during bidding comes back as an addendum that every bidder prices. The same question found in the field comes back as an RFI with a crew waiting, and often a change order behind it.
So the RFI count can go down after award even if pre-bid questions go up. Track both. The pattern behind most construction-phase RFIs is in how to reduce RFIs in construction, with benchmarks in the state of construction RFIs in 2026.
How does the tool keep the architect from getting a flood?
By not sending anything on its own. In Helonic, a reviewer keeps or dismisses each finding, and only kept findings can be turned into an RFI through RFI generation. Each draft carries the sheet, location, and a suggested question, and goes into Procore only after a person confirms it.
In a pilot, count how many kept findings became RFIs. If the number is close to the total, the sort step is missing. That measure sits alongside the others in what to measure in an AI drawing review pilot. The full test protocol is in how to pilot AI drawing review software, and the output criteria are in what to look for in an AI construction drawing review platform.
Practitioner insight
“The architect called me after the first run and said please don't send me 180 RFIs. I said you're getting eleven. The rest we fixed ourselves or put in the qualifications.”
